Lists in the Pennines

.

The highest point in the Pennines is Cross Fell (893m). This is also the highest point in England outside the Lake District. There are no mountains of Munro height in the Pennines.

By the Pennines we're talking about the vast upland area stretching from the English-Scottish border in the North to the Peak District in the South. From North to South, the mountainous areas involved are the Cheviot hills, the North Pennines, the Yorkshire Dales including the Howgill Fells, the South Pennines, and the Peak District. The South Pennines have no land over 600m and do not feature in these lists, but nevertheless the walking there is excellent. Elsewhere, especially in the North Pennines and the top of the Yorkshire Dales, the greatest areas of wild land in England are to be found. The topography is not as immediately appealing as that in the Lake District, but there is a real character to these wild and rough mountains!

The Three Peaks

The real Three Peaks! Three bold mountains standing above the limestone country of the Yorkshire Dales and walkable in one long day. See the Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks page for more information.

'Corbetts'

There are three mountains that would meet the Corbett criteria if they were in Scotland (Scottish, between 2,500ft (762m) and 3,000ft (915m) with at least 500ft (152m) of reascent from all approaches). These three mountains plus the 14 'Corbetts' in the Lake District make up the 17 English 'Corbetts'.

'Corbett Tops'

Corbett Tops are mountains of Corbett height that don't have the required 152m of drop, but have at least 30m of drop. The definition and terminology were created by TACit Press and applied to Scottish mountains, in order to neaten and extend the official SMC list of Corbetts. Corbett Tops are the whole group (everything with 30m or more of reascent), and Corbetts are the subset with drops over 152m. There are just 7 Corbett Tops in the Pennines, of which the 3 mountains above are also Corbetts, leaving 4 that are only Corbett Tops. These 4 non-Corbett Corbett Tops are shown in the next list.

'Grahams'

Grahams are Scottish mountains of between 2,000ft (610m) and 2,500ft (762m) in height with at least 150m of reascent from all approaches. Applying these numerical criteria to the Pennines gives us this list of 19 peaks, which includes all 3 of the Three Peaks.

'Graham Tops'

The topography and altitude of much of the Pennines make for a lot of peaks in this category. Just as the Corbetts are a subset of the Corbett Tops, so the Grahams are a subset of the Graham Tops. Graham Tops need only 30m of reascent. In the Pennines there are 19 Grahams and 36 Graham Tops that aren't Grahams, making 55 in all. The 36 non-Graham Graham Tops are listed below.
